The Avro Vulcan, a Complete History (Revised Edition)

Designed by a team led by Roy Chadwick, the man responsible for the legendary Lancaster, the Vulcan was created to carry Britain's nuclear deterrent in the 1950s and 60s.
Avro's delta-winged colossus became the backbone of the V-Force until the very end of the 1960s when the deterrent role passed to the Navy's Polaris submarine fleet.
The Vulcan remained in RAF service as a tactical low-level bomber armed with conventional and nuclear weapons, and was only retired following the introduction of the Panavia Tornado.

This is both a comprehensive work of reference and an authoritative history. It covers the origins of the Vulcan and delta-winged flight, details of every major production variant, reproduces extracts from the Vulcan's original Aircrew Manual and has appendices on both squadron disposal and the fate of every Vulcan built.
Also included is a wealth of information and anecdotes from former Vulcan air and ground crews, describing from first-hand experience what it was like to live with the mighty Vulcan.

The narrative is complimented with many photographs, scale drawings and colour profiles making this book the definitive history of this superb aircraft and an essential addition to the libraries of aviation historians and modellers. Additional photographs have been added to this new edition.

Avro Vulcan - The Early Years 1947-64

Advances in aerodynamics and jet engine technology after World War Two led to the RAF Air Staff producing an Operating Requirement (OR229) for a bomber that could use these new technologies. To meet this requirement, the Avro Initial Projects team adopted a Delta wing design. This was a major change in aircraft design, as little was known about the Delta wing.
The design of the Delta wing Vulcan was a major gamble by all concerned. However, it proved an incredibly valuable asset, especially during the Cold War. It was used in both high- and low-level roles and performed some of the longest bombing and anti-radar missions by the RAF during the Falklands War in 1982.
After serving over three decades with the RAF, the Vulcan was retired in1984, but it continued display flying with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust until 2015, delighting the public with its noise and manoeuvrability.

Fully illustrated with over 150 images, this book explores the history of the Vulcan, from concept to manufacture to service, providing insight from those who developed, designed, and flew it.

Vulcan : God of Fire

A historical account of Britain's nuclear deterrent force, the development of atomic/thermonuclear weapons and the bombers. It includes a description of the design, development and manufacture of the Vulcan, the flight-testing programme and entry into RAF service.
There is also a full account of the Vulcan's career, including its primary role as a nuclear bomber and as a key participant in the 1982 Falklands conflict.

Further coverage includes the use of the Vulcan as a refuelling tanker and reconnaissance platform, and the Vulcan XH558, whose last flight was on 28 October 2015.
Historical information is combined with first-hand accounts from former air and ground crews, and a full description of the service history or disposal of every Vulcan aircraft manufactured is included.
This book comprises a comprehensive work on the Vulcan aircraft and its role in British aviation, with many stunning images to accompany this definitive account.

Tim McLelland was a celebrated military aviation author. He wrote numerous well-known titles and contributed to many leading aerospace magazines, and was greatly respected in the field by those in the industry and those outside of it.

Avro Vulcan: Design and Development : Origins, Experimental Prototypes and Weapon Systems

The Avro Vulcan was the last V Bomber to see active service in its primary role during the Falklands conflict. It is the most popular of the three and one aircraft has recently become airborne again after a long period of rejuvenation.
It has always been a major attraction at air shows throughout the world, attracting crowds who delight in its unique delta-wing shape and amazing manoeuvrability.

The book examines the origins of the design, the prototypes and experimental aircraft and goes on to explain the modifications that were made to the last of the breed.
The author David Fildes, had access to many previously unpublished photographs and experimental design plans. This is because he was a leading member of the Avro Heritage Centre at Woodford now known has the Avro Heritage Museum and discovered a great deal of unpublished material in their archives.

The Avro Vulcan - a History

The delta-wing design of the subsonic bomber Avro Vulcan was years ahead of its time in terms of design when the Ministry accepted the proposal in 1947. Based on top secret Luftwaffe material after the end of the Second World War, the first prototype flew on 18 May 1951 and it went on to serve in the RAF from 1952 to 1984. During this time it carried Britain's first nuclear weapon, the gravity bomb, and played an important part in the deterrence policy of the Cold War.

This book provides a complete history of the design and development of Britain's iconic and much loved bomber, covering the period from 1947 to 1984, when it was finally withdrawn due to mounting costs.
The history takes in trials and development, taking flight, and the Vulcan B.2 and Black Buck attacks in the Falklands War, and provides details of all 136 airframes including completion dates, operational services in unit order, worldwide goodwill and flag-waving missions, making it a valuable record of this graceful and famous bomber aircraft.

Vulcan's Hammer - V-Force Aircraft and Weapons Projects Since 1945

At the height of the Cold War it was Britain's V-Force and its Valiant, Vulcan and Victor bombers that carried the UK's nuclear deterrent from the mid Fifties until the end of the Sixties. Their nuclear arsenal included not just freefall bombs but far more advanced weapons such as the Blue Steel stand-off missile. Blue Steel was intended to form the basis of many extremely advanced projects, such as the Z.101 research aircraft which would have given Britain the global lead in aerospace and weapons technology.
"Vulcan's Hammer" describes the development of these advanced weapons and the aircraft that were intended to carry them and examines the post-war alternatives to the Vulcan, Victor and Valiant whilst outlining the aircraft that were to replace these types, such as the Avro Type 730, English Electric P.10 and Vickers SP.4. Supporting types such as the Bristol RA.6 reconnaissance and Avro unmanned vehicles are also described for the first time.

This book also considers Avro's Weapon Research Division's work on improving Blue Steel and its further development into a research type for Britain's aerospace industry, with the aim of providing hypersonic aircraft and satellite launchers.
Illustrated with over 200 photographs, general arrangement drawings and specially commissioned artwork, Vulcan's Hammer presents the story of an alternative V-force.

Vulcan Units of the Cold War (Osprey)

The best of the three RAF jet bombers in the early years of the Cold War, the Vulcan was designed as the Avro 698, and possessed fighter-like manoeuvrability at low level despite its size. First flown in August 1952, the Vulcan entered service in February 1957. Most were equipped to carry the Blue Steel stand-off missile, but in 1966 around 50 Vulcans were re-deployed in a tactical low-level bombing role. Three flew during the Falklands War, and the last Vulcans in service were used as aerial tankers until April 1984.

This book examines the design of the Vulcan, exploring the improvements made to its engine and its evolving combat role. The illustrations include many in-flight photographs and detailed colour profiles. This is a timely examination of a distinctive and ground-breaking aircraft.

Contents: Forging the hammer: development of the Vulcan - Cold War deterrent: high level lay down - Long range stand-off - Low level sanctuary - Colonial adventures - The Versatile Vulcan (MRR and tanking) - Black Buck: the Falklands bombing - SEAD missions.
