Numerous images and documents, some of which are published here for the first time, present the two most important structures of a north-south connection in Europe: the Gotthard Railway Base Tunnel from 1882, which is 15 kilometers long, and the new Base Tunnel from 2016 (or Ceneri, opening in 2020), which is the longest railway tunnel in the world at 57 kilometers.

The latter is not only "a masterpiece of precision and technology, " wrote the Neue Luzerner Zeitung, but also "a masterpiece of direct democracy." The Swiss electorate gave the green light to this billion-dollar project twice, in 1992 and 1998.

Die Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn: MGBahn - GGB - SchB - Riffelalptram - DFB

La ferrovia del Cervino e del Gottardo (MGBahn) è una delle ferrovie a scartamento ridotto più famose e spettacolari della Svizzera. Non c'è da stupirsi, visto che il leggendario Glacier Express percorre proprio i suoi binari.
Altrettanto impressionante è la ferrovia del Gornergrat, che offre un collegamento diretto con il Cervino a Zermatt. Da essa si dirama anche il famoso tram Riffelalp.

In questo volume Hans-Bernhard Schönborn descrive le ferrovie sopra menzionate. Va inoltre citata la ferrovia a vapore a cremagliera della Furka (DFB), che ha rilevato il percorso del passo lungo il ghiacciaio del Rodano dopo l'apertura della galleria di base della Furka.

The author then goes on to discuss freight traffic in the first years and examines the consequences of the Gotthard Railway with regard to traffic across the Alps.
