French Traction

Data la sua estensione, la Francia ospita un numero enorme di locomotive. Il paese può essere sostanzialmente diviso in due: la metà settentrionale utilizza la trazione a corrente alternata, mentre la metà meridionale utilizza la trazione a corrente continua. Un gran numero di locomotive è a doppia alimentazione e può quindi circolare su tutto il territorio nazionale.

Le locomotive sono impiegate anche sui treni passeggeri, ma sono per lo più dedicate al trasporto merci. Il principale operatore, SNCF, gestisce la maggior parte, se non la totalità, dei servizi ferroviari in Francia. Il numero di treni passeggeri trainati da locomotive è in calo, ma è ancora possibile trovare sia locomotive diesel che elettriche.
I principali servizi passeggeri a trazione diesel sono gestiti da locomotive di classe 67 o 72, mentre i servizi passeggeri a trazione elettrica sono gestiti da locomotive di classe 17, 22, 25, 26 o 27. Un gran numero di servizi passeggeri si trova nell'area di Parigi, e la classe 17 è una specie in via di estinzione.

Per quanto riguarda il trasporto merci, sono in uso numerosi tipi di trazione diversi, dalla Classe 7200 nel sud fino a un gran numero di locomotive elettriche delle Classi 26, 27 e 37, presenti in tutto il paese. Esistono anche diverse classi di locomotive diesel utilizzate sulle linee non elettrificate, tra cui le Classi 60, 63, 66, 69 e 75.
