Armored Units of the Russian Civil War - Red Army (Osprey)

By 1920 the Red Army of Russia fielded an overwhelming array of armored cars, armored trains and tank detachments. These armored units played an important part in consolidating the newly won Bolshevik empire in the early 1920s; as a consequence of the fact that railways were the strategic arteries that essentially controlled Russia, armored trains have never played such a significant role in military history as they did in the Russian Civil War.

This title details the management, construction, repair, personnel, training and combat of the Red Army's armored units on all fronts, including such famous vehicles as Trotsky's armored train.

Contents: Introduction - Tanks - Armored Cars - Tachanka - Armored Trains - Operational History - Conclusion - Color plate commentary - Index.

Armored Units of the Russian Civil War - White and Allied (Osprey)

One of the most important conflicts of the 20th century, the Russian Civil War was the struggle that led to the formation of the Soviet Union. Following the overthrow of the Russian Provisional Government on 7 November 1917, the All-Russian Congress of Soviets met and handed over power to the Soviet Council of People's Commissars. Immediately forces began to assemble in opposition to the Bolshevik regime, and these became known as the Whites.

This title examines the armour that they had at their disposal throughout the course of the war. It was a varied collection including British and French vehicles and, perhaps most famously, the armoured trains that enabled the Whites to dominate much of Siberia.

BMP Infantry Fighting Vehicle, 1967-94 (Osprey)

The Russian BMP infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) was one of the most significant innovations in infantry tactics in the latter half of the 20th century. Built in response to the threat of nuclear warfare, it was the world's first IFV, providing the infantry squad with unprecedented firepower, mobility and protection. With over 55,000 manufactured since 1966, the BMP is also numerically one of the most important armoured vehicles ever built.
This richly illustrated book examines the development and design of the BMP, detailing its armaments, performance in combat and variants.

Contents: Design and Development - BMP Development - Inside the BMP - The BMP in Combat - BMP Export - BMP-3 - BMP Variants.

Bradley vs BMP - Desert Storm 1991 (Osprey)

In the mid-1960s, the Soviet Union unveiled the BMP, the first true infantry fighting vehicle. A revolutionary design, the BMP marked a significant departure from the traditional armoured personnel carrier, with a lower silhouette and heavier armament than rival APCs.

One of the most fearsome light-armoured vehicles of its day, it caused great consternation on the other side of the Iron Curtain as the Americans scrambled to design a machine to rival the BMP. The result was the M2/M3 Bradley.
These Cold War icons first clashed - not on the plains of Europe, but in southern Iraq during the Gulf War of 1991.

Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork, this is the absorbing story of the origins, development and combat performance of the BMP and Bradley, culminating in the bloody battles of the Gulf War.

Contents: Introduction - Chronology - Design and Development - The Strategic Situation - Technical Specifications - The Combatants - Combat - Statistics and Analysis - Conclusion - Further Reading - Index.

Red Army Weapons of the Second World War

While the Red Army's arsenal at the start of the Second World War included weapons dating back to the Great War or earlier, the 1930s' modernization programme had introduced the automatic Tokarev pistol and self-loading Tokarev rifle.
Its small arms were soon replaced by mass-produced sub-machine guns, such as the PPSh 1941, nicknamed the 'PePeSha,'. Supplementing the submachine guns, the Degtyarev Light Machine Gun DP-27. Fitted with a circular pan magazine, it received the not-unsurprising nickname 'Record Player.'

New mortars and towed artillery pieces, ranging from 76mm to 203mm, entered service in the pre-war years. In addition to a wide range of towed, self-propelled and anti-tank guns, the Soviets fielded the Katyusha rocket launchers in 1941, nicknamed the 'Stalin's organ' by the Germans.

The 1930s saw the introduction of the BT light tank series. The iconic T-34 medium tank series came into service in late 1940, joined by the IS-2 heavy tank from early 1944, the prefix letters 'IS' translates to Joseph Stalin. These formidable AFVs led the Red Army to victory in May 1945 over Nazi Germany.

All these weapons and more are covered with numerous images in this authoritative overview of the subject.

Soviet Armoured Cars 1936-45 (Osprey)

The armoured car has an important place in the early history of Soviet armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) - they were the most important AFV during the Russian Civil War and figured prominently in the mechanization of the Red Army that began in late 1929.
The 1930s saw the development and production of a wide variety of armoured cars, which were used extensively in Soviet conflicts from then on. They saw service in the Spanish Civil War, in the 1939 Manchurian conflict with Japan, and in the occupation of the Baltic states and the invasion of Poland and Finland.

Although many of its armoured cars were lost in the early months following the German invasion in June 1941, Russia continued with its armoured car development program, and the final model, the BA-64, was accepted for service in 1942 with over 9,000 built before production ended in 1946.

This detailed book provides a survey of Russian armoured cars from 1936 to 1945, focusing on the history, design, and specifications of the wheeled armoured cars that entered series production, including the rail variants and tracked BA-30.

Packed with photographs, cross-sections, and stunning battleplates, this is a comprehensive guide to some of the Red Army's fastest AFVs.

The Red Army on Parade (1) : 1917-1945

Undoubtedly our most ambitious project to this date, this volume describes the tanks and armoured vehicles paraded by the Red Army on Red Square from the first anniversary of the Russian Revolution in November 1918 until after the end of the war in both Europe and Japan in 1945.

From the first captured French and British origin tanks displayed on Red Square, via the first Soviet KS tank to the wartime T-34, KV and IS tanks, the volume describes the first public appearance of all Red Army tanks and other military vehicles displayed on Red Square and the background philosophy involved in their respective developments.

Die Geschichte der russischen Panzerwaffe (1919 bis heute)

The focus of this volume is the history of the Russian tank weapon since the end of the First World War. While the Soviet Union initially viewed the tank as a support weapon for the infantry, the Red Army had already developed similar operational principles in the early 1930s that the Wehrmacht would later put into practice in its mobile warfare.

Military historian Victor Shunkow describes the development of the Soviet tank industry, the development of all important battle tanks up to today's Russian armed forces, as well as the transformation of Russian tank deployment doctrine over the decades.

Die Waffen der Roten Armee - Beutegerät und alliierte Hilfslieferungen 1939-1945

When the Wehrmacht invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the Lend-Lease Act, which had already been put into effect, was also applied to the USSR. This made it possible to supply the Soviet Union with US weapons.
These deliveries were particularly important in order to close the gap until Russia's own military weapons production was fully up and running. In addition, they also captured weapons and equipment from the Wehrmacht during their later advance.

In this volume, Victor Schunkow describes all the weapons that reinforced the Red Army as captured equipment or through US aid deliveries.
