Division Leclerc : The Leclerc Column and Free French 2nd Armored Division, 1940-1946 (Osprey)

Il nome "Generale Leclerc" fu lo pseudonimo adottato dall'ufficiale gollista Philippe de Hautcloque per proteggere la sua famiglia nella Francia occupata. Divenne il più importante comandante militare francese e la sua divisione corazzata (la "2e DB") la sua formazione più famosa.
Nata come una piccola forza improvvisata composta principalmente da truppe africane, organizzata e guidata da Leclerc nell'Africa Equatoriale Francese, ottenne i primi successi con incursioni nelle posizioni italiane e tedesche in collaborazione con il Long Range Desert Group britannico.

In seguito alla vittoria alleata in Nord Africa, fu ampliata e riorganizzata come divisione corazzata sul modello dell'esercito americano, con carri armati e altri veicoli blindati statunitensi. Trasferita nel Regno Unito nella primavera del 1944, fu assegnata alla Terza Armata americana di Patton, sbarcando in tempo per lo sbarco in Normandia e ricevendo l'onore di liberare Parigi nell'agosto del 1944.

Hotchkiss H35 & H39 : Through A German Lens (Camera On)

Questo album fotografico della serie "Camera On" contiene oltre 90 fotografie del carro armato di cavalleria francese sviluppato prima della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. L'Hotchkiss H35 o Char léger modèle 1935 H era un carro armato leggero di supporto alla fanteria, lento ma ben corazzato, che però venne rifiutato dalla fanteria e adottato invece dalla cavalleria.
Dal 1938 venne prodotta una versione migliorata con un motore più potente, il Char léger modèle 1935 H modifié 39, che dal 1940 fu equipaggiato anche con un cannone da 37 mm più potente.

Oltre 500 carri armati Hotchkiss furono catturati e utilizzati dai tedeschi come Panzerkampfwagen 35H 734(f) o Panzerkampfwagen 39H 735(f), la maggior parte dei quali per l'occupazione e assegnati a unità di polizia o truppe di supporto logistico di seconda linea.

Renault R35 & R40 through a German lens (Camera On)

Il Renault R35, abbreviazione di Char léger Modèle 1935 R o R35, era un carro armato leggero francese per la fanteria utilizzato durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Progettato a partire dal 1933 e prodotto dal 1936, il carro armato era concepito come mezzo di supporto alla fanteria. A tal fine, era relativamente ben corazzato, ma lento e privo di una buona capacità anticarro, essendo equipaggiato con un cannone corto da 37 mm.

Allo scoppio della guerra, il ruolo anticarro assunse maggiore importanza, portando allo sviluppo e alla successiva produzione, a partire dall'aprile 1940, di una sottocategoria con un cannone più potente e più lungo, il Renault R40. A causa della sconfitta della Francia, l'R35/40 rimase il carro armato francese più numeroso della guerra, con circa 1680 esemplari prodotti entro giugno 1940.

Chars D2 au combat - Les éléphants de guerre du colonel de Gaulle

In 1937, Colonel de Gaulle moved from theory to practice. The man of the "paper tank", author in 1934 of a veritable manifesto in favour of the armoured corps - Vers l'armée de métier, his most famous work - would command a combat tank regiment, the 507th RCC, for two years in Metz.
There, with powerful 20-tonne tanks, type D 2 built by Renault, he made his unit, subject to strict discipline and constant training, a remarkable combat tool from which he "always expected the most".

When the war broke out, Charles de Gaulle received a higher command, in the 5th Army. However, he did not take his eyes off his D 2 tanks and presented them to President Lebrun, on the front lines of the troops in the autumn of 1939, during a sequence that has remained famous.
And, when it was time to engage in battle, on 16 May 1940, the first tanks to join his 4th armoured division created from scratch were, once again, the D 2s. These pieces of equipment, armed with an excellent 47 anti-tank gun, were engaged offensively at Montcornet, then at Crécy-sur-Serre and on the Somme in front of Amiens, before taking part in the final battles of the Battle of France.
