Ferries of Denmark / Danske Faerger

Denmark is a nation of islands approximately five hundred in total, of which around a fifth are inhabited. This new photographic album consists of over two hundred recently taken landscape photographs showing ferries all around Denmark's coasts, fjords, peninsulas and offshore islands.
The vessels range from very large overnight cruise ferries to small double-ended craft, maintaining routes of only a few minutes duration. Text in English and Danish.

P&O Ferries

In the late 1960s, P&O established ferry services in the North Sea and English Channel. Roll-on/roll-off operations and containerisation were introduced and new ships, facilities and investment was needed to take advantage of developments.

What followed was several decades of growth, buyouts and divisions. The twenty-first century saw the closure of several routes as the ferries saw increased competition from low-cost airline and the Channel Tunnel.
Throughout this period, P&O attracted a loyal customer base and became one of the most recognisable names on the sea.

Utilising a selection of rare and previously unpublished images, maritime historian Ian Collard delves into the story of this iconic company and its ships.

Sealink British Ferries

Le origini di Sealink risalgono ai battelli postali dell'epoca precedente al vapore. L'invenzione della macchina a vapore contribuì notevolmente allo sviluppo delle ferrovie e portò alla crescita dei battelli postali. Le compagnie ferroviarie private compresero la necessità di un sistema di trasporto integrato che includesse servizi operativi anche lungo le rotte marittime.

Le quattro principali compagnie ferroviarie furono nazionalizzate nel 1948 e i loro servizi di trasporto marittimo passarono sotto il controllo della British Transport Commission. Nel 1968 venne creata una divisione per i servizi di trasporto marittimo e internazionali all'interno del British Railways Board. Questa divisione separata operava con il marchio Sealink.
Nel 1979 le attività della divisione Spedizioni e Servizi Internazionali furono trasferite a Sealink UK Limited, una società interamente controllata.
