The Lifeboat Service in England: The North East Coast - Station by Station

Resumé - The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was established in 1824 and has a long and proud tradition of saving life at sea. Today, the volunteer lifeboat crews on the coasts of Northumberland, County Durham, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire operate high-tech state-of-the-art lifeboats for the purpose of saving lives at sea.

The RNLI currently operates sixteen lifeboat stations along the north-east coast of England. This comprehensive book has details of every one, and covers their histories and the current operations.
It also includes details of old stations that have been closed, photographs of lifeboat memorials, and contains descriptions of some of the dramatic, courageous and daring rescues undertaken by the lifeboat crews from the region.

Author Nicholas Leach has amassed a wealth of information about the lifeboats and lifeboat stations of the North East, past and present, visiting every one to provide a complete and up-to-date record of lifesaving in the treacherous North Sea between Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north and Skegness.

Valentia Lifeboats: A History

Resumé - The lifeboats of Valentia have been in service since 1946, when the volunteer crew were summoned to action by the firing of maroon flares.

Dick Robinson has been associated with the lifeboat station for almost sixty of those years, firstly as a child watching the flares, then as a serving crewmember, and finally as a maritime historian. In this detailed history, he captures the spirit of the station, together with the tragedies and sacrifices that make up its history.

"Valentia Lifeboats: A History", has been compiled using the firsthand accounts, original and rare images, and detailed records of the station. It is a fitting tribute to the people who have served here, and will be a record of the station for many years to come.

Padstow Lifeboats - An Illustrated History

Resumé - Padstow Lifeboat Station, first established in the early eighteenth century, is one of the most famous in the country, and has a long and proud history of saving lives at sea off the treacherous coast of North Cornwall. Pulling and sailing lifeboats were operated into the twentieth century, with the first motor lifeboat, Princess Mary, arriving in 1929. Steam lifeboats and a unique steam tug and pulling lifeboat combination were also operated.
Many medal-winning rescues have been performed by the Padstow lifeboats and in total 28 Silver medals have been awarded to Padstow lifeboat men. The current lifeboat station is situated at Trevose Head, where a new lifeboat house and slipway, to house a new £2.5 million Tamar class lifeboat, Spirit of Padstow, was completed in 2006, providing the station and its team of dedicated volunteer crew with state-of-the-art facilities.

This book has been compiled with the full co-operation of Padstow station and presents an authoritative account of more than 180 years of rescues and life-saving at sea.

The Lifeboat Service in Ireland - Station by Station

Resumé - After almost fifty hours at sea, in the worst conditions imaginable, the Ballycotton lifeboat Mary Stanford brought the rescued survivors from the Daunt Rock lightvessel to shore, ending one of the most dramatic and outstanding rescues in the history of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. For this courageous and stamina snapping rescue, the Gold Medal was awarded to Coxswain Patrick Sliney with Silver and Bronze medals going to the rest of the crew.

The famous Daunt Rock rescue is just one of the many award-winning services performed by Ireland's lifeboat men and women, whose courage, dedication to duty and willingness to help seafarers in distress has characterised the service since the early years of the nineteenth century.

Today, the lifeboat service in Ireland is the responsibility of the RNLI, which operates forty-five lifeboat stations, and this volume contains details of every one, with information about their history, rescues and current lifeboats.
Author Nicholas Leach has amassed a wealth of information about Ireland's lifeboats, past and present, and has visited all of the country's lifeboat stations to provide.
