Confederate Blockade Runner 1861–65 (Osprey)

The lifeblood of the Confederacy, the blockade runners of the Civil War usually began life as regular fast steam-powered merchant ships. They were adapted for the high-speed dashes through the Union blockade which closed off all the major Southern ports, and for much of the war they brought much-needed food, clothing and weaponry to the Confederacy.

This book traces their operational history, including the development of purpose-built blockade running ships, and examines their engines, crews and tactics. It describes their wartime exploits, demonstrating their operational and mechanical performance, whilst examining what life was like on these vessels through accounts of conditions on board when they sailed into action.

Contents: Introduction - Design and Development - Operation History - Variants - Colour plate commentary.

Confederate Ironclad 1861–65 (Osprey)

The creation of a Confederate ironclad fleet was a miracle of ingenuity, improvisation and logistics. Surrounded by a superior enemy fleet, Confederate designers adapted existing vessels or created new ones from the keel up with the sole purpose of breaking the naval stranglehold on the nascent country. Her ironclads were build in remote cornfields, on small inland rivers or in naval yards within sight of the enemy.
The result was an unorthodox but remarkable collection of vessels, which were able to contest the rivers and coastal waters of the South for five years.

This title explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they fought.

Contents: Introduction - Creation of a fleet - Ironclad designs - The European option - Shipbuilding - The Ironclad's role - Officers and men - Ordnance - Life on board - Tactics - The Confederate Ironclads - Bibliography - Color plate commentary - Index.

Confederate Ironclad vs Union Ironclad - Hampton Roads 1862 (Osprey)

The Ironclad was a revolutionary weapon of war, the first modern, armoured, self-propelled warships. During the American Civil War the South used ironclads to protect their ports from the Northern blockade. Impressed with their superior resistance to fire and, the North developed its own rival fleet of ironclads.
Eventually the two products of this modern arms race duelled at the battle of Hampton Roads in a clash that would change the face of naval warfare.

Fully illustrated with cutting-edge digital artwork, rare photographs and first-person perspective gunsight views, this book allows the reader to discover the revolutionary and radically different designs of the two rival Ironclads - the Merrimac and USS Monitor - through an analysis of each ship's weaponry, ammunition and steerage.

CSS Alabama vs USS Kearsarge - Cherbourg 1864 (Osprey)

The most successful commerce raider of the Civil War, the CSS Alabama almost single-handedly drove United States merchant shipping from the seas. Her illustrious career saw the capture of 60 merchant ships and two duels with ships of the US Navy.

This book gives the complete story of the development of the Confederacy's commerce raiding force and the ships the Union set against them. Compiled from numerous first-hand accounts as well as archeological evidence, it covers the three famous battles of the commerce raiders, CSS Florida vs. USS Wachusett, CSS Alabama vs. USS Hatteras, and CSS Alabama vs. USS Kearsarge, analyzing the strengths and weakness of each of the combatants. While the American Civil War is usually considered a land war, there was plenty of blood in the water.

Mississippi River Gunboats of the American Civil War (Osprey)

At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River and in the first few months both sides scrambled to gather a flotilla, converting existing riverboats for naval use. These ships were transformed into powerful naval weapons despite a lack of resources, trained manpower and suitable vessels. The creation of a river fleet was a miracle of ingenuity, improvisation and logistics, particularly for the South.

This title describes their design, development and operation throughout the American Civil War.

Contents: Introduction - The Mississippi Theater - The Union River Fleet - The Confederate River Fleet - The Role of Gunboats - Ship List - Union - Ship List - Confederate - Further Reading - Color Plate Commentary - Index.

The Confederate Steam Navy : 1861-1865

This is the first book-length study devoted to the vessels of the Confederate Navy, including all types used during the conflict: ironclads (both domestic and foreign-built), commerce raiders, blockade runners, riverine and ocean-going gunboats, torpedo and submersible vessels, and floating batteries.

The book emphasizes the development, construction, and design of these vessels using, where available, original plans, photographs, and contemporary descriptions. The author describes these vessels in context with wartime conditions as well as with the transitional naval technology of the era.

Over 100 vessels are detailed, including more than 30 ironclads, both American and foreign built. Over 150 illustrations are included, many of which have not previously been published. Also included is a section on steam engine technology of the era.

The USS Cairo - History and Artifacts of a Civil War Gunboat

On December 12, 1862, while patrolling Mississippi's Yazoo River, the ironclad USS Cairo struck a Confederate torpedo. Twelve minutes later, the gunboat slipped beneath the surface approximately eight miles north of Vicksburg, where it remained for exactly 102 years.
When researchers raised it in 1964, they were amazed to find many of its compartments and artifacts perfectly intact, almost as if the sailors had intended that their ship serve as a time capsule. Today, the Cairo is a snapshot of life aboard a Union gunboat, and affords a well-preserved glimpse into the past.

This is the first book dedicated entirely to the Cairo artifact collection. In over 160 photographs, it displays many of the warship's most interesting historical pieces, with descriptions, measurements and other pertinent information for each piece. Artifacts are organized according to use, with categories ranging from tobacco and smoking devices, personal effects and toiletries, and medical equipment to small arms and cannon.
The work also offers background information on the Cairo and the everyday life of a sailor and a short description of the Cairo's sinking and raising.

Union Monitor 1861-65 (Osprey)

The first seagoing ironclad was the USS Monitor, and its profile has made it one of the most easily recognised warships of all time. Following her inconclusive battle with the Confederate ironclad Virginia on March 9, 1862, the production of Union monitors was accelerated.
By the end of the year a powerful squadron of monitor vessels protected the blockading squadrons off the Southern coastline, and were able to challenge Confederate control of her ports and estuaries. Further technological advancements were included in subsequent monitor designs, and by the end of the war the US Navy possessed a modern coastal fleet carrying the most powerful artillery afloat.

This book covers the design, development and operational history of the Union's Monitor fleet.

Contents: Introduction - Monitor design - Monitor construction methods - Monitors in operation - catalog of ocean-going monitors - Bibliography - Color plate commentary - Index.

Union River Ironclad 1861-65 (Osprey)

At the start of the American Civil War, neither side had warships on the Mississippi River, which was a vital strategic artery. In what would prove the vital naval campaign of the war, both sides fought for control of the river.
While the Confederates relied on field fortifications and small gunboats, the Union built a series of revolutionary river ironclads. First commissioned in January 1862, these ironclads spent the next two years battling for control of the Mississippi, fighting in a string of decisive engagements that altered the entire course of the war.

This book explains how these vessels worked, how they were constructed, how they were manned and how they were fought.

Contents: Introduction - Design - Operations - A Catalog of Union River Ironclads - Other River Ironclads - Bibliography - Color Plate Commentary - Index.
