Scapa 1919 - The Archaeology of a Scuttled Fleet

The Last Cruise of a German Raider - The Destruction of SMS Emden

The story of the German light cruiser SMS Emden has been the subject of over a dozen books since her destruction at the hands of the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney on 9 November 1914.
Accounts of Emden 's raiding activities, her loss on the Cocos Islands, and the escape of her landing party have also appeared in official histories and books on the First World War at sea. Originally, the Imperial Navy was only used for coastal protection. But the ambition of Kaiser Wilhelm II turned it into one of the largest fleets in the world.
After the lost war, the now named Reichsmarine had to be rebuilt under the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. This rebuilding culminated in the increased naval armament of the Third Reich.

In order to quickly increase the size of its own war fleet, merchant ships were refitted and armed even in the age of sailing ships. The warring parties also used this tactic in the First World War.

Because they were inferior to real warships, Germany used the auxiliary cruisers it acquired in this way mainly to disrupt and prevent the enemy's shipping of goods.
The success of these ventures was questionable, but ships like the Seeadler under Captain Count Luckner became legendary.
