M4 Sherman - EE.UU.: libros - historia y modelos (1/2)

¿Un libro sobre tanques? Aquí encontrarás los mejores libros sobre la historia y los modelos de tanques de Estados Unidos (1/2).

Char Sherman - Toutes les variantes du M4 depuis 1941

The studies for the American medium tank M4 "Sherman" began in 1941. Despite a rather crude design and lacking the firepower and thick armor of the German tanks, the Sherman had the advantage of being simpler to manufacture, reliable and easy to maintain.
With 49 500 examples produced, it was more numerous than the German Tiger and Panther.

During the Second World War, the Sherman served in the US Army and the US Marine Corps, the British Army and the armies of the Commonwealth, the USSR and Free France, the Polish government in exile, Brazil and China.
Many of them continued to serve for decades after the end of the conflict, notably during the fighting in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, and in the Israel Defense Forces during the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

The text provides a detailed description of what is hidden behind the armour of this famous battle tank. It reports the experiences of those who used it in combat as well as the experiences of current collectors or enthusiasts about its maintenance and piloting.

La saga du Sherman

Far beyond simple narration, the book The Sherman Saga revolves around a tank but is broken down into several facets. Didactic, informal, historical and pragmatic, it highlights the role and difficulties of the crews who served this legendary tank.

The technical pitfalls and solutions found by the designers are explained, the different combat methods developed by the allies are detailed, whether it is a landing from an LCT, a progression in the bocage, a battle in the snow or a breakdown at the bottom of a mud hole.

Building the best tank is no guarantee of victory. The crew that serves it must also be educated and trained; that is where success begins. It is then necessary to "prepare" this crew to experience combat situations, to teach them that mistakes in wartime are paid for "cash", and that the bill often reminds us of the Grim Reaper.

The book not only evokes these situations, but exhaustively lists the equipment, the engines, the models produced and the many types of Sherman. Whenever necessary, the technical explanations are clear and precise so that for the reader, the thing becomes obvious.

Complete? Better than that! This book deals with repair and maintenance, while all the logistics necessary for combat are explained.
Collector, military history enthusiast, armored vehicle enthusiast or model maker, by reading this book you will have the feeling of being part of the crew, and the best of the "Sherman" is to be consumed in these pages.

Sherman Tank (Vol. 1) - America's M4A1 Medium Tank in World War II (Legends of Warfare)

This book documents the development and production of the M4A1 through its many variations, as well as its combat use around the globe. Produced by Lima Locomotive Works, Pressed Steel Car Company, and Pacific Car and Foundry, the M4A1 was the first of the famed Sherman tanks and preceded the welded-hull M4 into production.
Powered by a nine-cylinder, air-cooled radial engine, the M4A1 fought in North Africa with both US and British forces, across northwestern Europe, and on Pacific Islands with both the Army and the Marines, serving well into the 1950s.

The evolving design went through three major hull designs, multiple turret designs, and armament with either a 75 mm or 76 mm gun-all of which are detailed in this book. Extensive archival photographs are augmented by stunning color images of preserved tanks, taking the reader around and inside this famed warhorse. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.

Sherman Tank (Vol. 2) - America's M4 and M4 (105) Medium Tanks in World War II (Legends of Warfare)

Volume 2 on the famed Sherman medium tank covers the welded-hull, radial-engine-equipped M4 and documents its development and production through its many variations, as well as its combat use around the globe.

Produced by Chrysler, Pressed Steel Car Company, Alco, Pullman-Standard, and Baldwin Locomotive Works, the M4 bore the brunt of fighting until late summer 1944, when the M4A3 began to become available in quantity. Powered by a 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, the M4 fought in North Africa both with US and British forces, across northwestern Europe, and leapfrogged across the Pacific islands both with the Army and Marines.
The evolving design went through three major hull designs, multiple turret designs, and armament with either a 75 mm gun or a 105 mm weapon-all of which are detailed. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.

Sherman Tank (Vol. 6) - M32 and M74-Series Sherman-Based Recovery Vehicles (Legends of Warfare)

The United States, being at peace, had not foreseen the need for a specialized tank recovery vehicle, despite the ramping up of tank production in 1940-1941. However, observation of the new world war quickly pointed to the need for such a vehicle. Armored vehicles, immobilized for any reason, were easily destroyed by opposing troops, denying the possibility for recovery and repair or even the salvaging of parts after the battle.

This book chronicles the development and use of the US and British military Sherman tanks used as armored recovery vehicles.

M4 (76mm) Sherman Medium Tank 1943-1965 (Osprey)

The M4 Sherman tank was the mainstay of the Western allies between 1942 and 1945. Fast and modern it was a big success and was transported as far afield as Russia and North Africa. The American Chief of Staff claimed in November 1943 it was 'hailed widely as the best tank on the battlefield today...'. However, by the Normandy invasion of June 1944 this was not the case: the new German heavy tanks such as the Panther and Tiger were completely outclassing the Sherman.

This title covers the M4 version armed with the 76 mm gun, examining developments such as the HVSS suspension, using much new archive material.

Contents: Introduction - Combat debut - The 17-pdr option - Into production - Initial deployment problems - The shock of war - new ammunition - Problems and solutions - Upgunning the M4 tank - The M4 (76mm) in other theaters - Lend-Lease M4 (76mm) - Post-war export - The Korean war - Color plate commentary - Index.

M4 Sherman Medium Tank - Technical Manual (TM 9-759)

The M4 Sherman medium tank was the first American tank to carry a 75mm main gun mounted on a fully traversing turret. Powered by a 500 horsepower, liquid-cooled, "V"-type Ford engine, the tank could achieve 26 miles per hour on a paved road, and had a highway range of over 150 miles on a single, 174-gallon tank of fuel. Over 50,000 Shermans of various types were built during WWII.

Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance of the M4A3 Sherman, this technical manual TM 9-759 shows the basics of how to drive the tank and take care of its 8-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. The book also contains chapters on lubrication and inspections.
Originally printed in 1942 and labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

M4 Sherman Tank (Amberley Armour 1)

Once described as the 'worst tank that ever won the war', the Sherman was never going to be the equal of the German heavies in a direct tank-on-tank confrontation. But it was tough, reliable and built in such prodigious quantities that it became a war winner.

The Sherman came in many variants, and was converted for other uses by the Allies. The Brits gave it a bigger gun, made 'funnies' that could wade through water, build bridges, clear minefields and even spitfire. The Sherman lasted in service into Korea with the Americans and many were sold overseas to Israel, Uganda, India, Paraguay, Argentina and Mexico, with the last in service in Chile.

John Christopher tells the story of the M4 Sherman, using both new and archive images to show the most famous tank in the world in all its guises and variants.

Sherman - A History of the American Medium Tank

In this book R. P. Hunnicutt provides the comprehensive history of the technological evolution that led to the production of Sherman M4 in 1942 and its development, variants, and modifications.
Although the Sherman was part of the US pre-war development program, its adaptability to conditions on the front led to extensive British innovations drawn from battle experience.

As WWII raged on, these modifications transformed the Sherman into a highly specialized workhorse of the Anglo-American armored forces. Taking full advantage of the ease with which the Sherman absorbed modifications, British forces adapted Shermans as minesweepers, amphibious assault float tanks, bulldozers, flame throwers, CDL tanks for nighttime attacks, carriages for tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery, among other uses.

The Sherman, the epitome of American prowess in mass production, played an integral role in infantry support and fought in every major theater of operation in WWII. Due to its reliability, adaptability, and sheer strength in numbers, the Sherman M4 served with unmatched longevity, and Hunnicutt touches upon the wide range of combat conditions that the M4 performed under, in addition to its post-WWII activity.

Featuring over a thousand photos from the National Archives, diagrams, and detailed specifications, Hunnicutt's Sherman remains the definitive history of M4 for the military historian, professional soldier, and tank restorer.

However, by the time of the Normandy invasion of June 1944 this was not the case. The new heavy tanks being produced by the Germans were able to outclass the Sherman in both armour and armament.

Sherman Tank (Vol. 3) - America's M4A2 Medium Tank in World War II (Legends of Warfare)

Powered by twin General Motors diesel engines, the M4A2 Sherman was the standard tank of the US Marine Corps during WWII. In such service, having a common fuel with many of the landing craft simplified logistics. The M4A2 was also supplied in large numbers to Russia as well as the British. The M4A2 was used in some of the most severe tank combat of the war, both on Pacific islands and on the Eastern Front.

This book chronicles the development and use of these vehicles from concept to combat. Through dozens of archival photos, many never before published, as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existent examples of surviving vehicles, these iconic armored fighting vehicles are explored, and their history is explained.

M4 Sherman - Entwicklung, Technik, Einsatz

Named after a notorious Union general in the American Civil War, the Sherman M4 battle tank was actually inferior in many ways to its strongest German competitors towards the end of the Second World War.

But in practice, this most famous, versatile and most frequently built US tank proved its worth, so that it was still used in over 30 countries after the end of the war - in some cases well into the year 2000!

In this volume, Pat Ware not only tells the story of the development and use of the Sherman M4, but also explains all of its important features.
