Verenigd op de grond, daadkrachtig in de lucht - Een eeuw grondgebonden luchtverdediging 1917-2017

Vereiste het in 1914 nog meer dan tienduizend luchtdoelgranaten om een vliegtuig neer te schieten, vandaag de dag volstaat een enkele Patriot-raket om een doelwit op tientallen kilometers neer te halen. Het onderstreept de enorme technologische ontwikkeling die de grondgebonden luchtverdediging de afgelopen eeuw heeft ondergaan.

In 1917 zette Nederland zijn eerste schreden op dit terrein. Technische problemen en bezuinigingen ten spijt groeide de luchtdoelartillerie tijdens het interbellum uit tot een vaste waarde, om vervolgens tijdens de meidagen van 1940 haar finest hour te beleven.
Tijdens de Koude Oorlog expandeerde de luchtdoelartillerie tot het een na grootste onderdeel van de landmacht. Daarnaast ging ook de luchtmacht met geleide wapeneenheden bijdragen aan de grondgebonden luchtverdediging.

De val van de Muur bracht voor de luchtverdedigers een omwenteling teweeg. De nadruk verschoof naar expeditionaire inzet aan de randen van en buiten het NAVO-verdragsgebied. Ook de taakstelling onderging een uitbreiding. Onder meer crowd and riot control en psychologische oorlogvoering behoorden voortaan tot hun repertoire. Organisatorisch maken alle luchtverdedigers van de krijgsmacht sinds 2012 deel uit van het Defensie Grondgebonden Luchtverdedigingscommando.

"Verenigd op de grond, daadkrachtig in de lucht" schetst in woord en beeld de enerverende honderdjarige geschiedenis van de Nederlandse grondgebonden luchtverdediging.
