Classic Dutch-Built Coasters

Traditionally coasters had been owned by families with ships passing from one generation to the next along with the knowledge to operate and trade them successfully. The new generation were men who had left deepsea trades and then bought a coaster or they were former crewmen who wanted to have their own vessel. As the 1960s progressed, competition increased in the coastal trades and the ships increased in size in order to carry more cargo.

All the ships featured in this colour album were built in the Netherlands, although not all sailed under the Dutch flag. The heyday of the Dutch coaster was the early 1960s when over 1000 were in service.

Nederlandse koopvaardijschepen in beeld (deel 18) - Lijnvaart op West Afrika

In "Nederlandse Koopvaardijschepen in beeld", the most beautiful photographic material is used to highlight the ships that were part of the fleets of the Dutch shipping companies from 1945 onwards.
The often nostalgic images, provided with an explanation, are preceded by a short description of the shipping companies whose ships are shown in the booklet.

Part 18 of the series is dedicated to the shipping companies with scheduled services to Africa, in particular West Africa. The main shipping company at the time was the Holland West-Afrika Lijn, founded by HSM and VNS, among others.

Also in the picture are Nederlands-Franse Scheepvaart Maatschappij, D.G. Neptun, Elder Dempster Lines, Vanuden Africa, Leif Høegh, NileDutch Africa Line and Universal Africa Lines.
In 1961 KPM opened a liner service from the Adriatic Sea to East Africa. Van Nievelt, Goudriaan maintained two liner services to South and East Africa from 1979 to 1983, Africa Europe Shipping Line and Elephant Shipping Line.
Joon Shipping & Trading took over a container service to South Africa and Australia in 1989. Safmarine Container Lines operated two container ships under the Dutch flag in the trade to South Africa.

Nederlandse koopvaardijschepen in beeld (deel 14) - Tankvaart (2) - Buitenlandse eigenaren, Nederlandse vlag

The first part of "Tankvaart" (Dutch merchant ships in focus, part 4) was limited to the GHV tankers of the Royal Shell group and Dutch shipping companies with exclusively tankers in intercontinental "deep sea" tank shipping. This part focuses on foreign shipowners with tankers under the Dutch flag.

Over the years, the Dutch and Netherlands Antilles flags have frequently flown from ships owned by foreign companies. Even today, establishing a presence in the Netherlands or Curaçao apparently still offers such significant (including fiscal) advantages for many shipowners - particularly German, Scandinavian, Italian, and, for the past few years, Turkish - that a substantial part of our merchant fleet is effectively in foreign hands.

Among the first companies to recognize the importance of having foreign branches were the major American oil concerns, Standard Oil (Esso), Caltex, Cities Service, and Gulf Oil. Scandinavian shipowners - the first being Norness - the Belgian Petrofina, and even the Iranian state oil company also brought tankers under the Dutch flag, with management handled by firms such as Vereenigd Cargadoorskantoor, Vinke, and Van Ommeren.

Currently, the German shipowners Sloman-Neptun, Essberger and Jaegers (Chemgas), the Swedish shipowners Tarbit, Thun, Ahlmark and Broström, and the Italian De Poli, among others, operate tankers under the tricolor.
Following the reflagging of the Jo Tankers (Odfjell) fleet, the focus has shifted primarily to chemical, product, bitumen, and gas tankers in the category of up to approximately 8.000 tons deadweight, particularly active in European waters. The major oil companies have been operating exclusively tankers under cheap flags for many years.

Included are ships from Esso, Stanvac, Caltex/Chevron, Mafina, Norness, Nedgulf, Alesio, Odfjell, Essberger, Tarbit, Broström, Thun and many others.

Coasters op kaarten - Een maritieme groet

As long as postcards have been issued, ports and ships have been attractive subjects to send as greetings. Not least by the sailor himself who wanted to let his family or loved one know where he was. Preferably with a card showing the mooring of his ship. That is why you can find a cross on many old maps: here we lie.

A colourful collection of postcards from all over the world creates a wonderful picture of Dutch coastal shipping in the previous century. A Dutch coastal ship plays a role in almost every image.
Harbours that have almost been forgotten are brought into the spotlight. The peace of moored ships and the hustle and bustle of loading and unloading alternate.

Hundreds of unique postcards make "Coasters on Cards" a book that you have to experience...
