Liverpool Docks Through Time

Liverpool has been an important port since the seventeenth century, when the city began to import West Indian sugar and Virginian tobacco, exporting Lancashire textiles in return. As trade expanded through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, so too did the Liverpool Docks.

In "Liverpool Docks Through Time", Ian Collard uses a wide collection of photographs to guide us through the process of change and growth, from the early years through the massive expansion of the nineteenth century and the reconstruction and rebuilding that followed the Second World War to the new patterns of trade that emerged later in the twentieth century and up to the present day.

Covering everything from White Star ocean liners to the tugs of the modern docks and from hard-working freighters to restored sailing ships, this is a comprehensive guide.

Liverpool's Shipping Groups

The history of the great shipping groups of the nineteenth century is about family dynasties, business acumen, investment, risk taking and entrepreneurial skills. It is about everything that epitomises the Victorian age. Men of vision identified market trends and gaps in the provision of shipping services throughout the world. They were responsible for initiating routes that were that were to develop and blossom providing them with excellent returns on their original investment.

The main British shipping lines in this book, including among others Brocklebank, Cunard, Blue Funnel, Booth, Elder Dempster, Ellerman, Hall Lines, Lamport Holt and Cayzer, Irvine had their origins in Liverpool, once the premier port in the United Kingdom. Head offices were located in Merseyside as were many ancillary departments.

Over the past four decades the shape of British Shipping has changed and some of the established shipping lines that had been in business since Victorian times did not survive and many of the names in this book are now a memory of a different age. Others have been taken over by larger groups and their names have gradually vanished from the shipping records as their ships have been replaced or renamed.

It was difficult to imagine in the 1960s that the shipping scene would change so dramatically in such a relatively period. "Liverpool's Shipping Groups" is a celebration of a period that will not be forgotten by anyone with an interest in ships and the sea.

London Docks in the 1960s

The 1960s were the last decade of what might be called the traditional London docks scene. Ships could still be seen in the Pool, upstream of Tower Bridge; one could see lines of ships berth at the Royal Docks.
Famous shipping companies, some like P&O dating back over a hundred years, were represented, and cargo-handling methods were unchanged.

Barges were brought in to deliver or collect cargoes, while veterans of the war years and possibly earlier could still be seen. It was still possible to see passenger ships in the Royal Docks. As the new ships appeared they were a little bigger and a little faster, but otherwise little different from their predecessors of an earlier generation.

All this is captured through Mark Lee Inman's historic and rare images, taking in the stretch from Tower Bridge right down to Tilbury. The photography is supported by a wealth of available technical detail, including the vessel's date of build, gross tonnage and ownership, along with a comprehensive summary of its history and any claims to fame.

Maritime Portsmouth

For three centuries Portsmouth has been the leading base of the Royal Navy but the naval heritage of its port can be traced back to the Roman invasion of Britain. From the Roman walls of Portchester to the best-preserved Georgian dockyard in the world and the illustrious HMS Victory, Portsmouth is amongst the most important naval sites in the world.

This fascinating book, in its new and fully revised edition, focuses on the history and present status of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as well as the magnificent ships Victory, Warrior and Mary Rose that have been preserved and are now on display at Portsmouth.

Drawing on impressive original research and illustrated by a host of colourful photographs, author Paul Brown has created a concise and helpful guide to the key maritime attractions in Portsmouth and Gosport, including the Submarine Museum, the sea forts, the Gunwharf and the commercial port.

Mersey Shipping Through Time

The Mersey has changed over the past century. Famous ships and shipping lines have changed or gone altogether, the means of shipping goods has changed and the numbers of people in the docks have drastically fallen.
Household names such as Blue Funnel Line, Elder Dempster and Pacific Steam Navigation Company have been replaced by Fred Olsen, HAPAG-Lloyd and Maersk, while Cunard ships once more call into the Mersey, no longer carrying passengers heading for America or Canada, but holidaymakers in floating hotels.

With the advent of box boats and superfast ferries, we no longer see many of the traditional vessels that once called. Ian Collard calls upon his vast archive, as well as modern images, to show us the changing face of the Mersey over the past decades.
Inside are views of the Mersey ferries, the transformation of the docklands itself, on both sides of the river, and the ships that now sail up the Mersey to discharge cargo and passengers in the dock system.

Port of Tilbury in the 60s and 70s

The 1960s saw a gradual movement of shipping from central London and the quays, wharves and docks of the upper River Thames down river to Tilbury and Harwich. There was a managed closure of the dock system west of Tilbury and between the early 1970s and 1980s, the Surrey Commercial, India & Millwall Docks and the Royal Docks all closed down.

Down river, Tilbury was booming still, with expansion to cater for container ships and a still-burgeoning passenger traffic from the Tilbury Landing Stage. Tilbury embraced containerisation, which had been the death knell of the upper docks, and has continued to expand. The Landing Stage was a busy place to spot passenger ships, from Greece, Italy, Scandinavia, the USSR and Britain itself. Nowadays, the Port of London, comprising primarily Tilbury and Harwich docks, is still Britain's second busiest cargo port.

Campbell McCutcheon takes us on a tour of the docks in Tilbury, and the Landing Stage, and shows us the ships that called in the days immediately prior to the great containerisation boom of the 1970s and 1980s. The previously unpublished images show Tilbury at its zenith, and the transition from passenger travel to cruising, and from general cargo shipping to container ships, as well as the loss of the ferries that once called regularly at the port from Sweden, the Netherlands and France.

Shipping on the Thames and the Port of London During the 1940s - 1980s

During the 1970s and 1980s the Port of London, and shipping on the River Thames was in a state of transition. New methods of cargo handling, in particular the introduction of containers and Roll-on, Roll-off vehicle ferries called for new investment and a rethink on the way dock traffic was traditionally managed.
As a result, The Port of London Authority decided to run down and close the various London docks and concentrate all new investment downriver at their Tilbury docks.

These photographs, along with some from earlier decades, and mostly previously unpublished, are a fascinating insight into this period, when traditional ships and cargo handling methods worked alongside the new technology. Ships designed for carrying cargo in their holds were sometimes adapted to carry containers as deck cargo. There were also shipping types now lost to history, including colliers and sludge boats.
Not forgotten are the passenger ships - cruise liners to ferries. The various vessels that serviced the port from tugs to salvage craft and floating cranes.
Finally, the heritage craft from traditional Thames Sailing barges to former paddle steamers now adapted as floating pub/restaurants.

Ships of the Mersey - A Photographic History

Overshadowing the port of Chester, Liverpool grew in size from the 1800s on sugar and slavery. Expanding over the following two centuries, the port has grown to take over part of the other side of the Mersey, with docks at Birkenhead, Ellesmere Port and Wallasey, as well as along the coast from Liverpool.

Ian Collard brings together a superb selection of images of shipping on the river from the 1860s to the present day, looking at how the ports on either side of the river have developed and the ships which have called there.
From the Mersey ferries to the greatest of ocean liners, Ships of the Mersey tells the story of the ships, the people and the buildings of the Mersey docks system.

Thames Shipping in the 1960s and 1970s

At one point London had one of the largest dock systems in the world, and certainly one of the busiest. From Gravesend and Tilbury all the way to the Pool of London, the sides of the river were crowded with ships, with large dock systems full of ships loading and unloading their cargoes. Passenger ships called too, as well as numerous coasters feeding the power stations that served London.

Campbell McCutcheon uses a unique collection of images, all taken by the one person, to show the docks, wharves and the river as it was, teaming with ships from Blue Funnel, Clan Line, Ben Line, British India Steam Navigation Company, P&O, Union Castle Line and navy vessels as well as numerous foreign ships, ferries, ocean liners, cruise ships, tugs and barges.
With nostalgic views of the Pool of London, ships being repaired in the numerous dry docks, all of the docks, and some of the creeks, the book sets out to show the docks at the peak of their importance before the long decline of the 1970s and 1980s and the wholesale redevelopment of the London Docklands and the banks of the Thames.

The Port of Dover Through Time

The Port of Dover is Europe's busiest ferry port and is situated in south-east England. The port is owned and operated by the Dover Harbour Board, which was formed by Royal Charter in 1606 by King James I.

P&O Ferries and DFDS Seaways operate services to Calais and Dunkirk from the Eastern Docks. These docks were used for ship-breaking during the First World War and finally closed in 1964.
In 1966 over 600,000 vehicles travelled through Dover's Eastern Docks to France and Belgium.

The Western Docks are formed by the western arm of the harbour and include Admiralty Pier and other port facilities. They were used as a terminal for the Golden Arrow and other cross-channel train services.

The railway station closed in 1994 and this area of the port was used for cross-channel hovercraft services operated by Hoverspeed, which was declared bankrupt in 2005.

The railway station re-opened as the Dover Cruise Terminal and can accommodate up to three cruise ships at a time. The White Cliffs remain one of the most iconic and memorable parts of the Kent coast and the strategic importance of the town has been recognised throughout its history.

This well illustrated book describes the full history of the Port of Dover.

The Port of Liverpool in the 1960s and 1970s

In the 1960s and 1970s, many of the traditional shipping companies trading or based in Liverpool slowly vanished because of containerisation or competition from passenger aircraft. Many of these shipping lines had been in operation since the early years of the 19th century and had provided links with the outposts of the Empire and the developing independent countries of the Commonwealth.
They had been established in the days of sailing ships and had survived the transition from sail to steam and had provided a lifeline to the country in the difficult days of the First and Second World Wars and the Great Depression of the 1930s.

With a fascinating collection of newly unearthed photographs, shipping historian Ian Collard documents this important period of transition in the history of one of the world's most famous ports.
