Die erste Vespa, die 1946 auf den Markt kam, hieß "Paperino" (Entchen), hatte 98 cm³ Hubraum und war maximal 60 km/h schnell. Ihr Erfinder war Corradino D'Ascanio.
Die Ur-Vespa -98" sollte einfach und sparsam sein. Insbesondere der Antrieb und die Kraftübertragung sollten so einfach wie möglich sein und so entschied er sich für den Direktantrieb, zumal der Kettenantrieb in der damaligen Zeit aus Materialmangel fast unmöglich war. Das genial einfache Konzept wurde unter dem Namen Vespa am 23. April 1946 dann zum Patent angemeldet. Der Rest ist Roller-Geschichte!
